More than 20 Years of
Building Software and Trust

The Story of Rubico

Rubico is a software development company built on great people and lasting relationships. For 20+ years, we’ve grown into a global engineering team, building technology, careers, and trust along the way.

A Journey of Perseverance

We named our software company Rubico because we knew starting in a less-developed region and creating great opportunities for a young, motivated workforce wouldn't be easy. The name comes from Julius Caesar's crossing of the Rubicon River, a point of no return. For us, it came to represent the same idea: once we set our hearts on a goal, there was no turning back.

    The Mountaintop Conversation

Stan met Matt in a hill station in the Himalayan mountains. Neither was thinking about starting a software company yet. But somewhere between the conversations and the mountains, an idea began to take shape: what could they build that would create jobs and opportunity for a less developed community? It would take a few more years before that idea had a name.

    From Indiana to India

Stan, along with his family, moved from Indiana to India, focused on learning Hindi and culture in preparation to launch a software company. From their research, India had an up-and-coming software development industry. With Stan’s background in mechanical engineering and his experience building software for Caterpillar, where he had worked earlier, it seemed that God had prepared the way to make that vision a reality. Matt had extensive experience in accounting, finance, and administration, and the two seemed like the perfect partners.

    The First Hire

A young software engineer from New Zealand visited India, and his zeal and enthusiasm gave Stan and Matt the courage to officially launch Rubico. Rubico hired its first employee in Haridwar, India. No investors. No fanfare. The mountain conversation had finally become a company.

    Our First Office

Very quickly, we had a room full of employees and college interns and outgrew our home office. We rented a floor in a building that had a computer training institute and hired some of its graduating students. Soon we grew, and our landlord just added another floor for our expansion.

    Celebrating 100 Clients

We celebrated 100 clients, and what a joy to be able to serve so many great clients from Indiana like StairSupplies.com, Granite, Main Street Management, Adaptasoft, Bertsch-Frank and many other up-and-coming organizations and many others from around the world.

    The Expansion of Our Reach

Our vision in India was to be the best software company in our state of Uttarakhand. We wanted to be able to recruit even more talent, and Dehradun, the state capital just an hour away, would be the obvious choice. We sent a group of employees to Dehradun to start our second office in India. This is when we bought our first ping pong table and found that our team is as good at table tennis as software engineering!

    The White House

Back in Haridwar, we soon outgrew our office and couldn't add another floor to the building, so we decided to rent one of Haridwar's most iconic buildings, The "White House". A bigger building for a company in need of plenty of space for ping pong tables and meeting rooms.

    Celebrating 500 Clients

In addition to our custom software development service, we launched an ebook conversion service helping the world digitize and celebrating the opportunity to serve NASA, Wiley Publishing, Petersons.com, the State of North Carolina, and dozens of other publishing companies with technology services. We also onboarded enterprises like Milliman.com, TrFurniture.com, and DaySpring, a Hallmark company.

    Remote World, Close Together

While much of the world moved to working from home, Rubico chose to keep its teams together in the office. Not because work couldn't happen remotely, but because we believed trust, collaboration, and real relationships were worth protecting. In a year of uncertainty, we chose to stay connected and support each other through the pandemic.

    The Software Factory

Since we were growing, we decided we wanted to purchase our own property, and down the road was an old factory for sale. We set out on a 2-year journey of buying the factory and completely rehabbing it into a modern office building complete with a 500-person auditorium, pickleball and badminton courts, and a gym.

    20 Years and Counting

Twenty years after the first hire, Rubico had grown to more than 200 people, including 10 Americans working in our India offices. We moved into our brand new Software Factory that had become a proper software development company's campus, a place where people could build community, their careers, and do some sophisticated software engineering.

    Moving into a New Era

In January of this year, we announced our exclusive commitment to AI-driven software engineering. AI was changing how software development was imagined, built, and delivered. Rubico leaned into it completely, beginning a new chapter focused on becoming a leading software development company for the AI era.

OUR VISION

We improve millions of lives
with technology.

For us, technology is meaningful when it makes a real difference in people's lives. That means building things that solve real problems, create opportunities, make everyday work better, and make the world better than we found it.

OUR MISSION

Lead by Learning,
Succeed by Serving.

At Rubico, we believe in staying curious, staying humble, and assuming there's always more to learn from the person across the table. We put teammates and clients first, and measure success by how well we've built up the people around us.

Our Core Values

These core values drive who we hire and what it means to be a great teammate in Rubico.

  • Teamwork achieves more.

Passionate collaboration results come from working together. Passionate collaboration means showing up with energy, commitment, and trust—facing challenges together and being a unified, resilient team.

  • Do it right by planning.

Effective engineering leads to smarter execution. We anticipate needs, identify risks, and design solutions before jumping into action. We avoid rework, reduce stress, and deliver better results—faster and more efficiently.

  • Improving everything again and again.

We never stop looking for better ways. We’re driven by curiosity, creativity, and a desire to grow. Whether refining a process, enhancing a design, or learning a new skill, we embrace change and seek out opportunities to innovate.

  • Listen first, speak second.

Great communication begins with listening. We seek understanding—creating space for others to share, contribute, and feel heard. By active listening, we build trust, strengthen collaboration, and make smarter decisions.

  • Give and give some more.

We freely offer our time, knowledge, and support. Whether going the extra mile to help a teammate or client, we believe lasting impact comes from a spirit of service and a willingness to give beyond what's expected.

  • Do right even when no one’s watching.

Integrity is always doing the right thing. We consistently act with honesty and accountability, even when it’s inconvenient or unnoticed. In every decision, we earn trust and create a culture of reliability and respect.

Life Outside of Software Development

We believe God created the work in 6 days and rested on the 7th. Having time away from work refreshes our minds, hearts, and our families. We love what we do, but when we’re not solving very complex software problems and launching AI-built products, you may still find us doing other activities at Rubico together.

River Rafting

We’re a great team both in the office and out on the Ganges River.
